There is a major movement underway in this country to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day in order to recognize and understand Native American contributions to our history and our society. It is a day to honor them in special ways. Several states around the country have formally changed the name from Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day already. Many cities and towns around the country have done the same on a local level. Lewiston adopted the change in 2015.
Here at the Historical Association of Lewiston we decided to honor the
Tuscarora’s, who played a major part in Lewiston history by awarding a
scholarship to a deserving Tuscarora student. It is our hope to make this an
annual award given out every year on Indigenous Peoples day in front of the
Tuscarora Monument on Center Street.
Since we are a non-profit group, we have to solicit all our funds from the public. It is our hope that you will find it a worthy cause to donate to this scholarship fund. Your donations can be made to the Historical Association of Lewiston P.O. Box 43 Lewiston, NY 14092.
Make a note that you want your donation to go to the Tuscarora Scholarship fund. We can provide you with receipt for tax purposes if needed.
I hope to hear from you!
